Fairground fun descriptive writing grid game

This is a fun and unpredictable writing game, designed to help consolidate the learning and vocabulary students have attained while studying the other fairground resources. It also works as a stand-alone resource.

Instructions for playing the story grid game: The grid has to be printed out and, ideally, laminated. You need a couple of dice to play the game (not included with download.) Can be played with one player rolling twice or with two players. Where the two numbers you have rolled ‘meet’ on the grid, that is the numbered square you have to describe. So, if dice 1 reads a 2 and dice 2 reads as 4, go along the bottom to find square 2 is, then read up the side of the grid to find square 4...where the two lines meet, that’s your description square! Now look carefully at it. Then write a 2 sentence description down. Aim for 2 sentences per square, although some can be longer and a few shorter. Then roll again and repeat for at least 8 more turns.

Some grid squares are not images of the fairground. They are text squares you have to include in the paragraph you are writing, or instructions, such as shift tense. Just do what the squares tell you. Some images are more open-ended, such as a black hole, which you could write up as darkness, a tunnel opening, or even a metaphor for sleep. The rules are: You have to accept each square that your two numbers take you to and, unless it’s a repeated square, in which case you have to roll again. Nobody wants repetitive writing!
