Full 11+ English exam practice paper pack : 'Jimmie's Fight' - a tough paper for 11+ students!

This is a very large and detailed practice English exam practice paper pack aimed at able 11+ candidates. The text is at 'Hampton level' and it is a tough paper, ideal for students to work through after a few months of tuition. All tasks are devised by myself and are very close in level, format, extract choice and style to recent Hampton past papers. I marked Hampton School's English entrance exam papers between 2001 and 2015, so am uniquely qualified to set relevant and realistic practice papers! This pack is aimed very much at the top grammar, HMC and GSA schools rather than the generic preparation books, which are good for an overall grounding but do not specifically target the top-achieving schools. It contains:

  • A full practice English comprehension multiple choice practice paper with an extract taken from the novella 'Maggie: a girl of the streets' by nineteenth century writer Stephen Crane about plucky New York street children. Hampton School, for example, has previously set extracts from several 19th century texts, ranging from 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' to 'Wuthering Heights', so this is especially useful preparation as it contains archaic vocabulary and dialect. Being able to understand the nuanced meanings of pre-1900 texts, analyse the language and define archaic or dialectal vocabulary are all good exam skills to master. The supporting analysis of the more demanding language-based comprehension tasks helps students see how explanations can be structured and how quotations can be embedded. They can familiarise themselves with technical terms which the pack describes and applies in the sample answers. This boosts student confidence and shows them how to apply the same terms and techniques in their own answers. The comprehension answers are included, with supporting guidance points for tougher language analysis tasks.
  • A creative composition task based on an image with an alternative writing option for Section B. I include extra images to inspire creativity. You can easily adapt these to create extra follow-up tasks.
  • A composition planning aid and suggested vocabulary sheet to inspire those at a loss for words!
  • A sample composition with supporting comments to motivate students with good examples and give them extra inspiration.
The exam format follows the style of English entrance exams favoured by most HMC and GSA independent day schools:

Section A consists of 30-minute multiple choice questions and some language analysis tasks. Extensive supporting material plus answers are provided.

Section B is a 30-minute timed composition. The composition task format is a written task, but has the option of writing a response based on the supporting image. This enables the pack to meet the needs of different school exam demands for the composition task.

The pack includes: • A 32-page booklet, containing: • The comprehension text extract • Comprehension questions • Comprehension answers • Composition image and task • Sample composition response • A full analysis of the creative strengths of the sample response. • Other images throughout the pack, which students are welcome to use in other practice timed 30-minute compositions. • A further composition planner sheet, covering a rich variety of suggested words and phrases, to help with the exam composition. This is for parents who plan to use the pack as a teaching aid rather than exam practice paper. It can also be shown to students after their first attempt, to show them alternative vocabulary choices and tactics they could have used.
